Machame Route overview
Machame approaches Kilimanjaro from the south and uses tented camps. The route climbs through forest onto the Shira Plateau before joining the southern circuit around the mountain. It is known for varied scenery and for itinerary patterns that allow climbers to gain altitude during the day and sleep lower on selected stages.
How many days?
Six- and seven-day versions are common. Cruize recommends choosing the itinerary around acclimatisation and group readiness rather than simply selecting the shortest option.
Who does Machame suit?
It suits fit trekkers comfortable with camping, sustained hiking and a busy but rewarding route. The Barranco Wall is a notable non-technical scramble-like section where guides manage pace and spacing carefully.
