Southern Tanzania is ideal for travellers who are comfortable with longer overland routes and value a less standardised safari experience. The key to a good itinerary is allowing enough time between parks.
Ruaha as the wildlife anchor
For routes passing through Iringa, Ruaha is usually the main wildlife focus. A minimum of two nights is possible, but three nights gives more room for full game drives and a less rushed arrival and departure.
Mikumi for access and game viewing
Mikumi works naturally on routes to and from Dar es Salaam. Instead of treating the park as a simple stopover, schedule time for an afternoon or morning game drive when the route allows.
Udzungwa for walking and forest scenery
Udzungwa adds an active component. Because the experience is trail-based rather than a vehicle safari, choose the walk according to fitness, weather and the time available.
Do not over-pack the route
A seven-day safari can connect several Southern Tanzania highlights, but every extra stop reduces time for wildlife. If you want slower travel, extend the trip rather than compressing more destinations into the same number of days.
