Pack for comfort, not for a costume
A Tanzania safari packing list should focus on lightweight layers, sun protection, practical footwear and luggage that works with the transport in your itinerary. Neutral colours are useful, but there is no need to buy an entirely new wardrobe. Comfort during early starts, warm afternoons and cooler evenings matters more.
Clothing basics
Pack breathable shirts, comfortable trousers or shorts, a light warm layer and a simple rain layer depending on season. Early morning game drives can feel cool, especially at altitude. A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are important throughout the year. If your itinerary includes cultural visits, town stays or Zanzibar, add clothing appropriate for those settings as well.
Footwear
For a vehicle-based safari, comfortable closed shoes and sandals are normally enough. Serious hiking footwear is only necessary when the itinerary includes trekking or longer walking activities. New boots should be broken in before travel rather than tested for the first time in Tanzania.
Camera and electronics
Bring spare batteries, memory cards and a way to protect electronics from dust. A phone can handle many travel photographs, while dedicated camera users should think about lens reach and how much equipment they are comfortable carrying. Binoculars are valuable even when guides also carry a pair.
Documents and health items
Keep passports, insurance information, booking details and any required health documentation accessible. Bring regular medication in sufficient quantity and keep important items in hand luggage. Travel health requirements can change, so check current official advice before departure rather than relying on an old packing list.
Luggage size matters
Domestic light-aircraft sectors may have stricter baggage limits than international flights. Soft-sided bags are often easier to load than large hard cases. If your itinerary includes safari, trekking and Zanzibar, pack so that essential items can be separated for each section of the trip.
