Both routes lead to the same summit goal
Machame and Lemosho are popular approaches to Mount Kilimanjaro, but they differ in starting area, approach scenery and typical itinerary structure. Neither route removes the challenge of altitude.
Machame route characteristics
Machame commonly begins on the mountain’s southern side and moves through forest before joining higher routes. It is often offered over six or seven days; the shorter option leaves less room for acclimatisation.
Lemosho route characteristics
Lemosho approaches from the west and can provide a more gradual start with a longer itinerary. Operators often offer seven or eight days, though the actual profile depends on the programme.
Choose time over marketing claims
Ask for the daily elevation profile, walking hours, emergency arrangements and number of acclimatisation days. A longer well-planned climb is generally preferable to compressing the schedule merely to save a day.
Plan your next step
The right plan depends on your dates, starting point, travel style and how much time you want in each place. Ask for an itinerary with realistic transfers and clear inclusions, rather than a long list of stops.
